The song was released worldwide in November 1996 but was not released in the United States until August 1997. The track was written by Jackson in 1993, at the height of the highly publicized child abuse accusations made against him, while on tour in Moscow. During his visit to Moscow in September, Jackson came up with the song “Stranger in Moscow” which would be released on his 1995 album HIStory. It was during a time when Jackson felt very alone, far away from his family and friends, yet every night throughout his tours fans would stay by his hotel and support him. “Stranger in Moscow” turned out to be one of Jackson’s most critically acclaimed songs ever. The song’s music video depicts the lives of six individuals, including Jackson, who are left isolated and disconnected from the world around them. The imagery in the video has been replicated in television adverts. When the song was complete and Jackson was happy with the result, he decided to make the second disc of HIStory a full studio album instead of a greatest hits compilation with several new tracks. It was written by Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones for the singer’s sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Originally disliked by Jones, the track was almost removed from the album after he and Jackson had disagreements regarding it. There are contradictory claims to what the song’s lyrics refer to. Some people believe that they are derived from a real-life experience, in which a mentally ill female fan claimed that Jackson had fathered one of her twins. Others believed that the song was about tennis great Billie Jean King. Jackson was an avid tennis fan. Jackson himself, however, stated that “Billie Jean” was based on groupies he had encountered.
